クロバエはバッファロー・ブヨやターキー・ブヨとも呼ばれ、日中、特に首や頭の周りを刺し、皮膚をかゆくしたり腫れ上がらせたりすることで知られている。クロバエのシーズンは4月から7月まで続く。
クロバエは日中活動する5mm以下の小型のハエで、素早く強力に飛ぶ。特徴的な「こぶ背」を持ち、色は黒、灰色、薄い褐色、黄色などがある。ブラックフライの仲間は、特にテキサス北東部の流れの速い川沿いでよく見かける。
