Project Overview

All 140 Sawyer partners use unique, intentional programming to train individuals on how to use Sawyer Water Filtration Systems.

Water By Women educates women on how to use and repair their filtration systems, and empowers them to become respected Water Women in their communities. A Water Woman is empowered for the wellness of her family with a Sawyer filter and general health information. In return, she makes a sacred commitment to filter healthy drinking water for three other households besides her own.

Driven by compassion and guided by science for better health, Water by Women has trained 164,527 Water Women in over 48 countries.

The Marshall Islands may be small in terms of land mass, but cover a massive area of the pacific ocean about half way between Hawaii and Australia. To say these islands are remote is an understatement. Traveling to these islands is difficult.

Close to Home

Sawyer helps to disperse filters, insect repellent, and sunscreen to impacted communities. When disasters strike, Sawyer filters are often on site within the first 48 hours. This was true for Hurricanes Milton and Helene, which ravaged the Southern Appalachians in 2024. Entire counties were on a boil water notice with no end in sight. 

Being the perfect solution to bacteria-ridden and sediment-filled water, Sawyer donated over 24,000 filters to the region affected by the hurricanes. From empowering individuals to gearing up groups including churches, air drops, and SAR teams, we’re proud of the impact we were able to make together.

To recognize the 15 Year Anniversary of our first clean water initiative, Sawyer returned to the site of our first install – Tegucigalpa, Honduras - to celebrate! In 2023 we reunited with our original partner, Water By Women, to throw a Clean Water Quinceañeara in a cloud forest. We met over 150 "Water Women" and witnessed Sawyer filters that were in daily use for over a decade.

To help document the trip and the stories of the Water Women, we invited creator, outdoor educator, and industry expert Miranda Webster of Miranda Goes Outside.

The Process 

  1. Assess- The process begins with a door-to-door census for each community and pathogen testing of the local water sources. This ensures that the Sawyer water filter is an appropriate solution for the area.
  2. Distribute- Once the true scope of clean water scarcity and the effectiveness of the Sawyer filter to treat it, a systematic distribution begins. ‍
  3. Follow up - The Bucket Ministry team visits every household at least three times to follow up. During these visits the team member ensures the daily maintenance is being performed correctly to achieve its long-term effectiveness.

Sawyer x Water By Women

Water By Women is a non-profit devoted to bringing clean water to communities in over 48 countries around the world.
‍
They are mothers and missionaries who equip other mothers in need of water with filtration systems, providing them, their families, and their neighbors with safe, clean, healthy water.

Water By Women gladly and proudly collaborates with people of any faith who practice compassion and believe clean water is a basic human right.
