ジェフは太平洋岸北西部で家族とバックパッキングをして育った。ウルトラライト・バックパッキングとはほど遠かったが、1人50キロの荷物を積んで湖まで3マイルをハイキングし、週末に釣りをしたりキャンプをしたりした。2歳のとき、ジェフはそのうちの1回でジアルジアに感染し、別の1回では蚊に刺されすぎて、保育園では水疱瘡だと思われていた。

バックパッキングは、釣り、丸太のいかだ作り、ザリガニ捕りなどとともに始まった。最初のスルーハイクはジェフが20歳のときにPCTで、それ以来、彼は16のトレイル・スピード記録を樹立し、30キロ以上のハイカーとなった。
