When I began my 2,200-mile hike on the Appalachian Trail in 2015, I made the same mistake as almost every new backpacker. I packed for every possible scenario. It was this mentality that had me bringing items like a knee brace, cotton clothing, and duplicates until it was literally bursting at the seams. Within the first few days of hiking, my shoulders ached, my hips turned purple, and I realized that something had to change.
By the time I got to the first major stop on the trail, I was ready for a “shakedown” at Mountain Crossings. An experienced thruhiker watched as I poured the contents of my backpack onto the floor of the shop and helped me slash my pack weight by at least 5 pounds. This is where I learned that every ounce matters, and that making careful gear and hiking clothing selections is key to your success.
