Whether planning a vacation that involves plenty of time outdoors—possibly around bugs—or just want protection while enjoying your backyard, a forest hike or time in a grassland or desert, insect repellents can make a big difference. From sprays to lotions and wipes, these products come in various applicators, ingredients and formulas designed to keep insects away.

After interviewing entomologists and dermatologists, I’ve learned that the best insect repellents use Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)-approved active ingredients, are easy to apply, and can repel bugs for long periods without reapplication.
