What’s So Bad About DEET?
Last week I was at a local gardening-supply store — the kind of place that stocks its shelves with weed killers, deer repellents, and pesticides strong enough to make your dog or cat very sick. As I wandered the floor, I passed the aisle with insect repellents for humans and noticed that almost every spray and lotion had “DEET-Free” in bold type on its label.
Which got me thinking: Are products that contain DEET as their active ingredient actually bad for me? This is the stuff I’ve been dousing my kids and myself with to keep ticks and mosquitoes at bay for years here in northwestern Connecticut, one of the tickiest parts of the US, where some 40% of the tiny crawlers may carry Lyme bacteria.
