City Kids to Outdoor Leaders: Get to Know Camp Uwani
Camp Uwani was founded by two nature lovers with a powerful mission: to dismantle barriers to equitable outdoor recreation in their home of NYC.
Luis & Joselys, Camp Uwani founders, both grew up in The Bronx, NY as true city kids with no exposure to the outdoors. As they both grew to appreciate hiking and camping more and more, they found they struggled to find people of color in outdoor spaces. That is why they founded Camp Uwani in 2024 to create a welcoming, judgment-free hiking community where beginners, especially people of color, can learn, explore, and connect.
