予防措置が必要な理由
マダニは細菌、ウイルス、寄生虫に感染する可能性がある。連邦疾病予防管理センターによると、米国で最も一般的なマダニ媒介性疾患には、ライム病、バベシア症、エーリキア症、ロッキー山斑点熱などがある。ライム病は発熱、頭痛、倦怠感、皮疹を引き起こし、放置すると関節、心臓、神経系に広がる可能性がある。特に懸念されるのは、増加傾向にあるとされるパウワッサン病である。CDCによると、発熱、頭痛、嘔吐、脱力感、錯乱、発作、記憶喪失が特徴的なこのダニ媒介性疾患は、長期的な神経障害を引き起こす可能性があるという。
