スルーハイキングのカルチャーショック：アメリカとヨーロッパのトレイルの違いをナビゲートする

私はアメリカでいくつかのロングトレイルをスルーハイクしてきたが、スペインのGR11トレイルを5週間歩いた後、アメリカとヨーロッパのスルーハイク文化には大きな違いがあることに気づいた。

2023年の夏、ハイキング・パートナーのフランと私は、スペイン・ピレネー山脈を通る全長510マイルのGR11トレイルのスルーハイクを目指した。標高差150,000フィート（約8,000メートル）、下りも同じくらいあるこのトレイルは、かなりハードだ。

私たちの目標は30日間で完走することで、1日の獲得標高は約5,000フィートになる。これはワンダーランド・トレイルや ロング・トレイルなど、私がこれまでに完歩した最も険しいアメリカのトレイルよりもかなり険しく、ピレネーの冒険をそれだけでアメリカのスルーハイキングとはまったく異なる体験にするには十分だっただろう。

しかし、私たちはヨーロッパとアメリカのスルーハイキングの違いを他にもたくさん発見することになる。トレイルでの生活様式の違いにカルチャーショックを受けたほどだ。GR11への挑戦は、山脈の険しさによるところもあれば、アウトドア・レクリエーションにおける非常に現実的な文化の違いによるところもあった。
